Ebook About The first major biography written for a general audience of the logician and mathematician whose Incompleteness Theorems helped launch a modern scientific revolution.Nearly a hundred years after its publication, Kurt Gödel’s famous proof that every mathematical system must contain propositions that are true—yet never provable—continues to unsettle mathematics, philosophy, and computer science. Yet unlike Einstein, with whom he formed a warm and abiding friendship, Gödel has long escaped all but the most casual scrutiny of his life.Stephen Budiansky’s Journey to the Edge of Reason is the first biography to fully draw upon Gödel’s voluminous letters and writings—including a never-before-transcribed shorthand diary of his most intimate thoughts—to explore Gödel’s profound intellectual friendships, his moving relationship with his mother, his troubled yet devoted marriage, and the debilitating bouts of paranoia that ultimately took his life. It also offers an intimate portrait of the scientific and intellectual circles in prewar Vienna, a haunting account of Gödel’s and Jewish intellectuals’ flight from Austria and Germany at the start of the Second World War, and a vivid re-creation of the early days of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ, where Gödel and Einstein both worked.Eloquent and insightful, Journey to the Edge of Reason is a fully realized portrait of the odd, brilliant, and tormented man who has been called the greatest logician since Aristotle, and illuminates the far-reaching implications of Gödel’s revolutionary ideas for philosophy, mathematics, artificial intelligence, and man’s place in the cosmos.Book Journey to the Edge of Reason: The Life of Kurt Gödel Review :
This is a biography of Godel, a brilliant but often troubled mathematician. The author does a superb task of explaining the person, the times and the place. I lived in Prague and had an office in Brno and traveled back and forth to Vienna. But that was two Wars and a century later. The Vienna of Godel and his contemporaries was gone and the Czech Republic took its own place in a modern world. The collection of intellects debating world changing ideas seems no more. If anything, one may see this as a loss. The author takes us back and forth between the Vienna of Godel, the time in Princeton, and the societies in both places. The reader gets to understand the time and the environment, the stress and the intelligentsia that existed. The author highlights the many contemporaries of Godel and the ideas that they were pursuing. The author also does a reasonably good job on describing Godel's mathematical contributions. To a degree they are often obscure and can all too often be expanded well beyond their region of coverage. But the author holds a great balance for example in the issues regarding Hilbert. The author does a significant amount in explaining the relationship between Godel and Einstein at Princeton. Many authors have attempted this but the current author does and exceptionally great exposition. At the time these individuals were doing their mathematical discoveries, physics was the hot topic. Yet Godel managed to excite the interest of many. In this book he continues to do so. Kurt Godel achieved something more than monumental in the logic of thought and mathematics. He proved the "Incompleteness Theorem." This theorem, in a nutshell, holds that in a closed system of rational thought ( e.g. Mathematical number History) will contain at least one axiom that cannot be proved. The logical conclusion is that mathematics is a true science describing natural phenomena and not merely a clever man-made system of consistent rules.Godell's life history is fascinating. It illustrates the evil forces of European anti-semitism. It describes the effort to save European scientists by exporting them to the U.S. and the scientist's struggles to survive and work here. Moreover the biography describes the great and close friendship of Godel and Albert Einstein. The pair spent many hours alone investigating the reality of gravitation as well as the philosophic ideas that transcend the modern science philosophic idea of "positivism" ( the notion that if observation displays an event or feature, it must be true.) A biography that if carefully read may change your ideas forever.
